The Ardeche District Print

ImageLocated in southeast France, on the eastern border of the central Massif between Auvergne and Provence, Ardeche belongs to the Rhône Alpes region. The Rhône serves as its natural border stretching 135 km. With continental and meridonial influences in its climate and vegetation, the département is also known for its characteristic villages nestled in the hollows of the valleys or perched on rocky hillocks. Ardeche, is also the name of a fierce river that has tirelessly, for thousands of years, been digging its way into the limestone to create a spectacular canyon. Pause for a masterpiece: the famous natural arch of the 66m high Pont d'Arc, which is used as a triumphant entrance to the gorges classified as a Nature Reserve since 1980. And a few steps away, the Chauvet cave and its incredible 30,000 years old bestiary. A region where Nature is queen with a third of the département classified, in 2001, as a Nature Reserve; a region that combines bliss with splendid landscapes, mills, steam-engine railroads, rivers full of fish, hydrotherapy and gourmet gastronomy.
