“One foot among the vines and the other in the cellar”

ImageSuch is the motto, three hundred years old, of the Montmollin family which between the lake and the Jura, cultivates four vineyards. As for the cellar, this is situated in the middle of the picturesque village of Auvernier. Usually one of the owners, Pierre or Jean-Michel de Montmollin will welcome you warmly and help you discover their vast selection of wines. Sample from the local “terroir” list and try the white wine “Goutte d’Or” (drop of gold) made from chasselas grapes.

The name is taken from a spot, a “lieu-dit”, near Auvernier. The dry side of the chasselas is softened by a floral note and a slight sparkle. A whole range of “specialities” are listed, numerous award-winning wines highlighting the expertise available on the estate: “Oeil-de-Perdrix”, a rosé wine made from a red variety of the pinot noir grape; “Perdrix Blanche”, a white wine, also made from the same red pinot noir; “Pinot gris”, a dry white wine, the “late harvested” version offering that little extra sweetness so particularly appreciated with foie gras or a dessert. There is also a fine selection of red wines available, these too based on the pinot noir grape (I hope you follow me!), some matured in oak barrels. Finally, spare a thought for the eaux-de-vie: lie or marc of the pinot noir, kirsch (not to be forgotten with a Neuchatel fondue), or the Prune du Verger (plum), an ideal way, the owners say, to loosen tongues. An address equal to its reputation, both for the quality of the welcome and that of its products.
