Time for oneself

Oases of well-being, the thermal centres in the Valais know how to make one forget the problems of everyday life. The Romans made them famous but the thermal waters have been known since the dawn of time. Flowing in waves when the snow melts or gushing abundantly, the thermal springs are among the most important tourist attractions in the Valais. You don’t have to be old or even unwell to visit a centre: today the fashion is “SPA” or “Sanitas per Aqua” and the baths have been revamped to propose body care, well-being and simple pleasure. Whether simply to relax or for medical reasons, a stay in a thermal resort takes you to a world apart, in the midst of magnificent mountain scenery and congenial company.

Loèche-les-Bains Print

It’s the tops

This, the largest “well-being” resort in Switzerland, lies in a circle formed by the surrounding Torrent mountains. Nearly 4 million cubic metres of water, heated to 51 degrees centigrade, gush from the neighbouring springs daily to supply the public and private thermal baths of the resort. In fact, nearly every hotel has its own fitness centre with a pool. Two other large centres are available to visitors. The “Linder Alpentherme” thermal centre has both indoor and outdoor swimming pools and also its famous “romano-irlandais” baths. As for the Bains de la Bourgeoisie, they offer swimming pools, saunas, underwater massages and a toboggan in the form of a snail! With 22 open air and covered pools, Loèche-les-Bains is the largest fitness resort in the Alps.

Rendez-vous at “Carpe Diem”

Rendez-vous au Carpe DiemOn the holiday road in the valley where the Rhone River flows, a land of almond trees and figs, Saillon is a town steeped in history, as may be seen from the Vieux-Bourg perched high up on the hill-top. Benefiting not only from the first grape vines they planted, the Romans must also have taken advantage of the qualities of the hot water springs that gushed close to Saillon. The ultramodern thermal centre was built in 1983, both as a health resort for locomotor and rheumatic complaints and also for general care. Four thermal baths (heated to between 28 and 34 degrees centigrade) are available to those there for a health cure and to other visitors. There is an area dedicated simply to general well-being “Carpe Diem” where the various care programmes available have been given Latin titles: laconicum, caldarium, trepidarium – a care centre which offers, for example, massages and treatments using sea-weed. There is a fitness and aerobic area and a summer toboggan run.
