Hard to find anything stranger than an ostrich! Barely have you arrived that a hundred ostriches, emus and rheas gaze at you with their large, inquisitive eyes. No doubt you immediately feel less lonely, but, as the guide is quick to explain, you must take care not to intrude on their territory or annoy them. Though slender in appearance, the big fellow is armed with a lethal claw, capable of disembowelling a lion! His strength is evident in its weight of over 100 kg and a height which can attain 2.5 metres. Not surprisingly, though incapable of flight, this champion sprinter (top speed of 80 km/h) and high-jumper (1.5 m) has no natural predator.
Ostriches evolved millions of years ago and have been domesticated since the dawn of human history. It must be said that everything is good about the ostrich: the flesh is as tasty as beef and has far less cholesterol, the hide makes for fine leather, the eggs are amazing and its feathers prized by cabaret belles and carnival top-hats. So do not hesitate to stop over at Livron-sur-Drôme to see for yourself this (amazing) wonder of nature - especially between May and October, when the hatchlings emerge to take their first baby steps. A fascinating spectacle!
