Musée archéologique du Pègue: our ancestors, the Gauls

Print

ImageIf you think that the Gauls were thwarted barbarians, it's high time to take a visit to the Museum at Pègue!

Renamed « Salle Charles Lagrand », after one of its principal contributors, the museum is a veritable Ali Baba's cavern. Terra sigillata artefacts, brooches or fibulas, and steles dedicated to Gallo-Roman divinities: these objects come mainly  from excavations done between 1955 and 1985 on the hill of Saint Marcel, a hill fort from the Iron Age.  An astonishing « pseudo-Ionian » collection which takes its originality from the influence of the Greeks who were settled at that time on the Mediterranean in the South of France. A contact that  allowed the Gauls to learn the use of a potter's wheel, money, writing ... and the consumption of wine. A little museum located in the village of Le Pègue between Nyons and Grignan, well worth the stop!
