The Dubœuf winery introduces golf

Print

ImageDubœuf's winery in Romanèche-Thorins, in the Beaujolais, has made it almost a yearly habit of inaugurating some new extension or attraction to its œnopark. The year 2010 was no exception, and spring saw the addition of a miniature golf course to its other attractions.

Picturesque and inviting, the course goes well with the philosophy of this place which is dedicated to the wines of Beaujolais and Maconnais. Established in 1993 by Georges Duboeuf, a professional wine-grower, the site also retraces 2000 years of history via a wax museum, robots, 3D films and an interactive slide-show. An exhibition of tools and materials illustrates the history of wine and the life of vintners from ancient Egypt up to the beginning of the 20th century. Spread over 30,000 square metres, it offers an intimate insight into the world of wine-growing and wine-making. The whole experience is enriched by the words and voices of Pierre Tchernia, Paul Bocuse and Bernard Pivot.

To talk of wine is to talk of transport, and here it means the ancient Romanèche-Thorins station situated on the historic Paris-Lyon-Marseille line. Inaugurated in 1854 and meticulously restored, today it houses a collection of miniature trains, large models and, as its centrepiece, the imperial wagon offered to Napoleon III by the Compagnie du Nord. A trip to the theme gardens and a panoramic view of the vineyard and the neighbouring villages from the building's terrace offers a real glimpse of the best of Bacchus and his world.

Market day: regional meetings

Print

ImageIf there is a city definitely not lacking in markets, it is greater Lyon, which boasts not less than 300. A record for French cities! Each district has its own market, a place that recalls the village places where one can find fruit, vegetables, meat, poultry, flowers, wine or clothing. And then there are thematic markets, such as the booksellers' market on the banks of the Saône, market for plants at la Création. Places for meetings and conviviality, the markets are also a slice of life where one as easily finds Lyons' middle class as one finds students and families from all socioeconomic backgrounds.

A small selection of markets that absolutely must be experienced:

Clochemerle: a novel and an oenological-tourist hub

Print

ImageGabriel Chevallier wrote Clochemerle in the 1930s, while spending his vacation in the Eaux de Vaux hotel in the Beaujolais region. Clochemerle is a novel about morals and a social critique that is as colourful as satirical. It introduces a wine-growing mayor, who decides to install a urinal near the church, in hopes of securing his political career. This piece of infrastructure becomes the center of resentment in the village and the main theme for this world-famous novel. Taking after Clochemerle, Vaux (or the other way around!) has developed, since the summer of 2006, into an oenological-tourist hub that invites guests to (re)discover the novel through village streets leading to the famous urinal. «Clochemerle»  offers a free sampling club, as well as «acoustic window boxes»  that border the rue Gabriel Chevallier and broadcast extracts from the book strategically throughout the village.

Lyon from the Balcony of Angels

Print
Perched on two hills (Fourvière and the Croix Rousse), between two rivers (the Saône and the Rhone) carrying a thousand years of history, Lyon deserves to be viewed from this height. A visit to the rooftop of the Basilica of Fourvière offers this opportunity. It is also an occasion to discover this mystical Romano-Byzantine fortress from a different angle; built in the 19th century for the glory of Mary, the highly detailed decoration is reminiscent of medieval religious art.

Industries of yesteryear

ImageLeave Beaujeu on foot or mountain bike for an interesting trail with splendid country views, that leads you from where the tanners worked along the Ardières river, past a paper mill, the building where mined stone was crushed which later became a hydroelectric station and finally to the old 'tacot' (small gauge train) line.
