The markets of Lyon: at the heart of the City

Print

ImageIf there is a city definitely not lacking in markets, it is greater Lyon, which boasts not less than 300. A record for French cities! Each district has its own market, a place that recalls the village places where one can find fruit, vegetables, meat, poultry, flowers, wine or clothing. And then there are thematic markets, such as the booksellers' market on the banks of the Saône, market for plants at la Création. Places for meetings and conviviality, the markets are also a slice of life where one as easily finds Lyons' middle class as one finds students and families from all socioeconomic backgrounds.

A small selection of markets that absolutely must be experienced:

The « classics »: the Quai Saint-Antoine market, by all means, a large real market on the banks of the Saône where one can find everything - vegetables, fish and fruit juices - and everybody has a joyfully mixed clientele. Then there is the market of the Croix Rousse, on the boulevard and the little square of the same name, which goes organic on Saturdays. Place Carnot is the kingdom of the early fruit and vegetable sellers, of domestic animals, with a market for farm products on Wednesday nights which allows the people of Lyon to do their marketing after work.

The « thematic »: the booksellers' market comprised of some twenty shops on Saturday and Sunday from 10 am to 6 pm, the market for plants on one of the first Sundays in May or the market of la Création which unites a good hundred artists, painters, sculptors, jewellers, and even poets and musicians. So, get your little baskets!
