A Walk in Taninges : Marcelly Peak Print

ImageThe Marcelly Peak, 2002 m high, is visible from a distance and can be seen from the banks of Lake Léman. This incredible belvedere offers a 360° panoramic view of the Alps, the Mont Blanc and the Léman basin. The paths that lead up to it also offer a very beautiful view of the mountain pastures and lakes during the walk. Short marked routes for a three and a half hour walk which, apart from some brief, rather steep and aerial sections, does not present major difficulties.

Departure: Molliettes Carpark (Praz de Lys, locate) situated at 1495 m. At 50 m, take the path which begins on the uphill slope of the road leading to the Ramaz pass. This rocky path with a rather steep slope leads quickly through mountain pastures and Lapiaz - limestone rocks with occasional crevices - to a rocky projection, before emerging right next to a small mountain lake : Lake Roy (Alt-1660 m).

Follow the path on the right side of the lake which leads steadily through the pastures on the mountainside upto the Perret pass (Alt-1862 m), which offers a splendid view of the surrounding mountains - in particular the Môle, the Massif des Brasses, the Voirons, the Massif des Bornes - and the Jura chain in the distance.

From the Perret pass, take the path that leads to the ridge in the direction of the Marcelly Peak. Despite its narrowness, this path is not dangerous, but it is better to bypass it by using the paths laid out on the mountainside; two small summits merge at this ridge (Frête de Penaille : Alt-1892 m and Pointe de la Couennasse : Alt-1980 m).

As for Marcelly Peak, it is better to avoid the very aerial route that is equipped with a cable and leads inevitably through the «Pas à l’Ane» to the summit and instead, use the path that bypasses the Peak in the north and allows easy access to the summit (Alt-2000 m), a summit from where you can enjoy a panoramic view of the surrounding mountains and especially the Mont Blanc massif, the whole Chablais massif, the Aravis massif and the Valaisan Alps.

On the way back, take the same route until the intersection located before the Pointe de la Couennasse and walk back down on the path that goes right and meanders along the side of the mountain scree. At the foot of this path, go left on the 4X4 track that leads to the Roy mountain chalets, then, from the chalets follow the track to the left of the Roy ski lift and take the path which runs along the lake on the right. At the end of the lake, walk back down the path used on the outbound journey to get back to the Molliettes carpark.
