Beaujolais: more than a name, it's a promise! Who has never feverishly waited for the 3rd Thursday of November every year to finally taste the famous new Beaujolais with some friends? Still, it would be a shame to reduce Beaujolais to just this occasion, though it certainly originates from an honest conviviality. Beaujolais is much more than that.
First of all it's a region: a superb region spread over sixty kilometres between Mâcon and Lyon and offering multiple visages. Three large parts emerge: to the north and west you will find a mountain: mysterious, deep, magical, it's a medium-sized mountain (the summit = Mont Rigaud at a height of 1009 metres), a paradise for walking and hiking, goat farming and moors. Then comes the region of vineyards. There, where the village Beaujolais sits, the 10 Beaujolais wines (Morgon, Moulin-à-Vent, Juliénas, Fleurie, Chénas, Saint-Amour, Chiroubles, Brouilly, Côtes de-Brouilly et Régnié) are produced, a real ocean of vines on soft hills that offer a restful view. Finally, in the south we find the region called « des Pierres Dorées », (the Golden Stones) from the ocre-yellow colour of the stone. You must see these charming villages with their golden homes set ablaze by the setting sun; the sight is stunning. The Beaujolais and Beaujolais supérieurs are produced here.
Over a weekend, come « billebauder » in Beaujolais, as we say here; you will leave filled with wonder and enriched by a thousand discoveries!
