Carouge est la ville sarde du canton de Genève créée au siècle des lumières par la volonté du roi de Sardaigne Created during the Romantic period by the will of the King of Sardinia, Victor-Amedeus III, Carouge was elevated to the rank of town by royal letters patent on 31 January, 1786. Designed by Piedmontese architects, the town has been able to retain the flavour of the 18th century until today.

Love at first sight

It is a little as if time has stopped in Carouge. Behind the carefully restored facades is an unexpected and poetic universe. With their typical friendliness, families will open their private houses* to visitors and share with them the unseen side of the décor, the gardens and the secret courtyards. Craftsmen will show you their workshops*: the glass blowers, bookbinders, weavers and watch makers. Harmonious architecture, a past charged with history and a convivial atmosphere has prompted the establishment of numerous artistic centres in Carouge in such varied disciplines as painting, cartoon cinema, music and the theatre.

*Given the private nature of the places visited, visitors are kindly requested to book a rendez-vous with Illico, a partner of the town of Carouge (www.illico-travel.ch).

City of earthly pleasures

Everything in Carouge conjures up images of fine food and conviviality and this doesn’t date just from yesterday! As long ago as 1780, Carouge had 143 drinking houses. If many have disappeared today, a good supper still figures highly among the favourite occupations of the men and women of Carouge and also among those from Geneva who don’t shy from crossing the Arve River to reshape the world over some gastronomic delicacy or a more humble plate.

A beehive of activity

This Sardinian town has always been a centre of creativity: in addition to a flourishing manufacturing industry in the 17th century, by the end of the 18th, more than 450 craftsmen were based there working in some 30 trades. Today, Carouge’s industrial zone groups a wide range of activities at local, regional, national and international levels, whether crafts people, small and medium sized industries or large firms.
