Lorsque Claude Thalmann, enfant de Vaumarcus, et sa femme Hedwige, entreprirent de rénover progressivement le château de Vaumarcus qui menaçait de tomber en ruine, leur objectif était de rendre à ce monument du 14e siècle sa vocation initiale, soit d?en faire un lieu de vie qui se suffise à lui-même. Pari tenu : à Vaumarcus, il est aujourd?hui possible de déguster un repas médiéval The castle of Vaumarcus was in danger of falling into ruin when Claude Thalmann, a local man and his wife Hedwige decided to renovate this 14th century monument (construction actually began in the 10th century).
Their objective was to return it to its initial vocation: to make the place self-sustaining as it would have been in the 14th century. Little by little, the challenge was met. Today it is possible to eat a medieval meal (you use your fingers and are served by young squires and fair ladies!), spend the night in the bedroom where according to legend Charles the Bold slept the night before the battle of Grandson, to set up a workshop in rented premises on site and even to get married. From 1999, the castle has housed the Marc Jurt Foundation, dedicated to art. History never stops at Vaumarcus.
