Château de Denens: 1000 years in the service of wine Print

Image A parchment from 1005, the oldest document in our possession on the Denes region, confirms that vineyards during that period were cultivated around the estate. These vineyards, then the property of the Geneva chapter, most certainly go back to a very ancient period and no doubt recreated a tradition introduced by the Romans.

The Urbs began to colonize the Helvétie following the victory of Bibracte. After Divico's defeat in 58 BC, the people he led had to return to the territory of present day Switzerland and accept the Pax Romana. The towns, burnt by our ancestors during their exodus, were reconstructed according to latin models.

In those days Nyon, Lausanne and Yverdon were named Noviodunum, Lousonna and Eburodunum. These boroughs were linked with roads that spanned the countryside lined with villas, estates and farmhouses. The ruins of these dwellings are strewn all over the Waldensian estates, including those of Denens. There's no doubt about the fact that the estates, belonging to the latin owners, included vineyards. In fact, the colonists received their plots of land from the Roman administration as a reward for their dedication to the army, but they had to commit themselves to planting vines.

La Suite, well worth exploring Print
restaurant design au centre de Lausanne, à deux pas de la gareAlways full since it opened at the end of last summer, a reservation at this restaurant is highly recommended. Its normal, paradise can’t be far away: inventive French cuisine, a fine wine list and an interior decorative style that is both warm and convivial. The tiniest criticism: service can be slightly slow but made up for by a lot of amiability. In summer, book a table on the splendid rooftop terrace. Without a doubt, a restaurant well worth a visit.

From the barrel to the vine stock Print

ImageThe house of Matthey celebrated 125 years in November. Everything began in 1880, when the founder of the dynasty, Henry, set up a workshop in Vallamand where he produced oak boles and kegs. This small village in Vully vaudois is dedicated mainly to wine growing, and the youth have no difficulty living off this trade. Bearing in mind that even if the making of douelles is nowadays considered a rarity, in those days every wine growing hamlet had at least one cooper among its artisans.

Before the revolution caused by the appearance of plastic and stainless steel, all beer or wine containers, including railway wagons, were wooden. His son, Louis, took over the activities of his father in 1920. Did he foresee the problems created by the arrival of these less noble but cheaper materials, or did he simply love the earth? I wouldn't be able to say! The fact remains that during his lifetime he purchased wine growing plots and built up a respectable estate.
