The innovative work of Genevan architect, Maurice Braillard, and Parisian engineer, André Rebuffel, the Salève's cable car was inaugurated in 1932, replacing the electric railway that was built in 1892 and disappeared in 1936.
It's connected to a higher station at the very end of a vertical wall of a few hundred meters. Considering the 5 roads that lead to the top of the Salève, this amazing elevator is still the most comfortable way of getting there in just a few minutes. From the top of this gigantic rocky island at 1300m, one looks over the Genevan Basin and enjoys the stunning panorama from the Jura Mountains to the Alps, including Mont-Blanc. It's a place to dream, but it also offers the opportunity to enjoy less contemplative activities. A few ideas:
Mountain biking: for example, ride down the old funicular railway to the Etrembières castle Paragliding. The Salève has no less than 3 lift-off sites - from the cable car's arrival station - from the viewpoint indicator - from the hogbacks Hiking: - leave from the Salève cable car's landscaped footpath (1.5h), heading towards the viewpoint indicator, and discover a 360° panorama. - a one-hour botanical walk that leaves from the cable car and crosses meadows down below. A gourmand break: either for a meal or snack at the café-restaurants along the Salève's ridge !
Information: The cable car is open every day from May through September from 9:30am to 7:00pm. It leaves every 12 min. 2-way Adult: 10.50 € / Family: 21 € Brochures - The Salève's cable car, an observatory in the territory, for sale 10 € at the Greater Annemasse's tourism office (a territory and its future, projects for the cable car, the cable car's technical history, which heritage?) - Mont Salève on foot: 22 itineraries on foot or mountain bike to discover and rediscover the Salève Enquiry: Greater Annemasse's tourism office – Tel. +33(0)450 950 710 Photo: Alain Ruffié - OT agglomération annemassienne |
