The inauguration of La Maison du Salève: 23.09.2007

Print

Doors open to discovery !

ImageDid you know that the « Maison du Salève » still exists? It recounts the fascinating story of this mountain situated on French soil, but dear to the hearts of Genevans.

Le Salève has been the object of scientific studies, is a rock climbing haven and a tourist destination for illustrious personalities, and has therefore always given rise to fascination and innovation. Born in a tropical sea some 50 million years ago, shaped by tectonic folds and partially tamed by the human hand, this seditious relief mountain holds thousands of treasures. Le Salève's Joint Union decided to dedicate a « house » to this fascinating mountain, to tell its exceptional story, offer an understanding, and protect its fragile biotope.

This « house » is set in the Mikerne farm, an ancient outbuilding of the Pomier Charterhouse, and is a museum and lively interpretation centre. A big animated and interactive scale model explains the mountain's identity and the need to preserve it. Enjoy the permanent and temporary exhibits alongside an educational and playful garden, as well as regional products, and the «hors-sac» hall for a little relaxing pause or picnic. Celebrate the opening day on September 23 with theme-walks, donkey-rides and regional products to taste. You can concoct your own picnic, listen to the sound of the Alps horn and attend presentations by the folklore groups « Lou Galopin» and « Cors des Alpes.»

Inauguration: September 23, 2007, 10am - 6pm, La Maison du Salève, Route de Kikerne, F - 74160 Présilly, Ph. + 33 (0)450 95 92 16. Taninges: heritage and contemporary art

ImageChartreuse (Charterhouse) de Mélan - This place is more than a group of buildings that unveils itself; it's a whole environment. It has close to ten centuries of history that started in 1285, to be precise, when Béatrix de Faucigny decided to build a convent for nuns in order to shelter her and her son's sepulture. Over the next thousand years, the building was transformed, then abandoned by its occupants during the French Revolution, and then transformed again, into a school. It was finally destroyed by a fire in the middle of the 20th century.
