The Auberge of Mégevette: a room with a view on the Risse

Print

ImageDespite being at an altitude of 884m, a so-called « middle-mountain » altitude, the panorama has all the makings of a postcard! And the Auberge of Mégevette, situated in the eponymous village, is the kind of address friends like to pass to each other when they want to spend some time incognito.

The reception itself is anything but anonymous: Eric and Jacqueline welcome you as if you were old friends. Four rooms only, but all with balconies that open to the sweet Risse valley. The sweetness is as evident in the kitchen. A professional confectioner, the owner knows how to prepare absolutely diabolic desserts and is an expert at homemade foie gras which he offers alongside traditional fondues and raclettes. Nice filets de perche as well. In short, it is simply beautiful and good!

What to do in Mégevette ?

- In summer:  there are, of course, walks with a whole range of waymarked paths, mountain bike trails that follow roads, tracks and paths through the forests and the pastures of Mégevette. Mégevette is also known for its incredible meandering caves, which are extraordinarily tortuous. A curiosity that has been declared « d'intérêt national » and can be visited with a guide. Also to see is the ancient sawmill furnished with a water wheel, a system as simple as it is brilliant, which still works as it used to in the Middle Ages (information: + 33 (0)450 35 91 83). The village and its traditional houses, as well as St. Nicolas church, also merit a mention. As for fishing amateurs, they will find delight in the Risse, a stream filled with fish, which teases the gudgeon with lovely tumultuous sections, made of steep banks and deep « gouilles », alternating with more calm parts.

-  In winter: Trails for the cross country skiing amateurs to pack down: 22km of marked trails, with a black, a red, a blue and a green. The snowshoe routes along the banks of the Risse are equally inviting.

- Did you know? Mégevette's name originates from « mege and eve », which means between the waters - the village is crossed by the stream « Le Risse ».
