The Mont Rose refuge: the very latest in high tech from the Swiss Alpine Club

ImagePerched above Zermatt and close to the Italian border at more than 2,800 meters of altitude, the Mont Rose refuge has undergone a complete transformation, blending modern design and ecology. A very high tech project that was developed with the EPFL for more than 6 million francs. The futuristic building which has five floors and houses 120 beds, will open its doors to guests in March 2010.

Sparkling in the sun with its aluminium coating and resting on stainless steel foundations, the new building is a long way away from the ancient cabin built in 1895 that used to stand in its place. Thanks to a photovoltaic installation in its south wall and a rapeseed oil-based system, this next-generation refuge covers 90% of its energy needs. In summer, the water melting off the snow caps is collected and stored in a big tank, and used water is recycled through a micro-filter system. Only the gas used in the kitchen will have to be delivered by helicopter. Inside, the « cabin » - made, of course, entirely of wood - has an understated, ultra-modern style. A building that is worth a look as much for its spectacular vistas on the glaciers of Gorner, Grenz and the Mont Rose as for its avant-gardist architecture.
